IMSML Website Article 52/2024: Resolution MSC.545(107) - Amendments to the Code for the Construction and Equipment of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units 1979 (1979 MODU Code), Resolution MSC.546(107) - Amendments to the 1989 MODU Code, AND Resolution MSC.547(107) - Amendments to the 2009 MODU Code.

All three Resolutions of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) amend the MODU Code 1979, 1989 and 2009 respectively in particular the prohibition of construction materials containing asbestos. All three resolutions came into force earlier this year on 1 January 2024. The three Resolutions are applicable in Malaysia via Malayan Shipping Notice (MSN) 12/2024, as the 14th, 15th and 16th subject-matters in Appendix 1.

As the amendments to 1979 (Section 2.7), 1989 (Section 2.8) and 2009 (Section 2.10) are identical, this author has decided to deal with all three Resolutions in this article. The amendment provides for the following:

[1] Units should be constructed from steel or other suitable materials having properties acceptable to IMO;

[2] For all MODUs, new installation of materials which contain asbestos should be prohibited.
